A strong black young lady

You handle conversations well with people, your molar teeth even shows while you laugh. The next person (your colleague) looks at you and sees the glow. She thinks to herself “wow, I wish i was her, she is always happy”. Your world is bloomy and rosey, she thinks. You are perfect, you have it together. Your Facebook, instagram and twitter account confirms it all.

After work you go home. You get to the house and shoot straight to your bedroom, you sit on the bed for some time thinking things through. You feel so overwhelmed. You literally do not know what to do anymore to change the situation. Then you start to wonder “what do people do when they do not know what to do?”. You wish you could just scream and cry but crying has not changed the situation previously therefore you hold yourself.

You kneel down beside your bed and pray for God to invade the situation. You stand up, sit on the bed again and start thinking again, but now you start to realise how grateful and thankful you should be. Even though the sun is not shining that bright for you right now, but you are thankful, thankful for your family, thankful for the shelter you have, for the food you have, the cloths, the friends and the loving and supportive boyfriend you have. All of a sudden your problem seems small. You smile from within. You also realise yes your current job is not what you love, yes it is not even aligned to the career you want and studied for, but it is definitely better than nothing and you are grateful for it . All you can do for now is to keep developing yourself while you keep looking and applying for the job you really long for.

I chose to write about this experience of mine because i am not alone in this boat. I come across a lot of young people here in South Africa who have qualifications but are struggling to get a job or even an internship in their field of study and they have to settle for odd jobs to earn a living .

Young women you are Strong, Capable, sufficient, Intelligent, Beautiful  and Worthy.

Nice narrative…sucked me in…and if it makes you feel any better, I’m 53 and still searching for the same answers. Not sure it’s possible to find them. But the journey is a blast (or can be) if you give in to the struggles. I, too, find myself chastising myself for not being grateful for all the things I DO have and focusing only on what I DON’T have. It’s a human conundrum I think.

Saludos
